What to pack? Well…
First, (I might have said this before) -think light!
Second, think even lighter … 18 days door-to-door …
Here
is a list loosely based on the last trip with Cathy's (extensive) additions:
o The Bible – A book not an app.
First, when you read a passage to a congregation they do not associate app and
Bible very well. Second, English Bibles are good gifts to leave at the end
of the trip.
o A journal and a couple of pens
(pens are also useful gifts) It is
a good idea each night to spend a few moments writing. For some weird reason
doctors say this helps us process, remember and decompress. Apparently tapping
into devices does not work as well. Plus, a journal with your thoughts and
impressions is the best souvenir you will ever have.
o Passport
o Ear plugs, sleep mask (I rarely sleep on planes ... )
o Travel pillow
o Malaria and travel meds
o Toiletries - Remember: NO
aerosols. Other liquids, soaps and pastes (hair sprays, perfumes, medicines
containing alcohol) must not exceed 500ml per article and 2.0L in total per checked bag. Reminder: for carry-on baggage limits are 100ml per article to 1.0L in total. Also, any repellents we bring cannot be
considered "poisons."
o Liquid soap / shower gel
(better for sharing; cleaner if dropped; usable as shampoo)
o Shampoo (share where possible)
o Toothpaste (share where
possible; larger tube to check, small tube and tooth brush in carry-on)
o Sport sunscreen (share where possible)
o Lip Balm
o Small package of baby wipes
(unscented) for when we are on the road (share where possible)
o Toilet Paper (TP) x2 and 4
travel-packs of Kleenex for when we are on the road; they have TP but frankly,
it seems to dissolve … 😝
o Deodorant x2 (seriously, bring an extra to use on feet; our water supply will be ok … but if not after a day
or six without water others may appreciate the extra effort here - so this would be just-in-case) 😐
o Small bottles of hand sanitizer
o Razors and shaving stuff
o Razors and shaving stuff
o Tylenol, Ibuprofen (share where possible; one large bottle should be plenty for all of us)
oSanitary napkins / supplies
oSanitary napkins / supplies
o Toothbrush x3 (if a toothbrush
drops on the floor or if you forget and rinse in non-bottled water its useless;
if you don't use them they are extra - an appreciated gift; pack one in carry-on)
o 2 washcloths and 1 bath towel (to leave behind); dark colors are
better
o Flip flops – for washroom and
to wear in the shower (to leave behind)
o Food items (in case you can’t
handle the food, or want something different / extra; important to pack in
tightly sealed containers / Ziploc freezer bags) I never take anything but the water flavouring - live together, eat together and learn together. But if you must:
o Water flavouring packets /
squirt bottles – I took 6 for 3weeks
o Instant oatmeal
o Small jar of peanut butter
o Granola bars, nuts, crackers
(individually wrapped)
o Instant soup
o Small mirror to mount in the
bathroom or bedroom – seriously, three weeks without seeing my face and nobody
mentioned my hair!!! till I saw the pics!!!
o Small clothes line (share where
possible, leave behind in cottages if possible - two for all of us should be plenty).
o Laundry detergent packets
(share where possible) One of the women at Rorya, Margaret, will do laundry for us as required. These are good for smaller items and socks.
o USB battery pack (see limits
in earlier posts) - this trip we have much more access to electricity so these are unlikely to be needed. Callum will have one because the 360 and time lapse cameras can run off the USB. These are appreciated as gifts for those without electricity.
o Solar, battery, and/or USB
flashlight (to leave behind if possible)
o Electrical
Adapter or two – TZ is the same as UK
o Camera, battery and charger
o Cell phone; ensure you set up your International cell phone package before you leave if you want one
o Hat – I didn’t have one last
trip and burned!
o Sunglasses
o Contacts (disposable daily’s
are better)
o Eye glasses and case
(especially for safari – may be too dusty for contacts; an extra set might be advisable; you can leave an old pair behind but you will not have access to repairs or replacements) Small screws and screw driver.
o A pillow case, fitted sheet, sheet for your bed (to leave behind) - we will each buy a pillow and nets when we arrive in Musoma.
Clothing – remember you are wearing one
set of clothes for travel.
So in addition:
Guys
o Hoodie (of course!!!) or
sweater or light coat (for the safari crew, the Ngora gora will be very cool at times)
o Bathing suit
o Pants x 2 (I take 1 plus what I am wearing; but you might want an extra)
o Button up shirt with collar x 2 (e.g. golf / polo style)
o Socks x 3 (black; quick dry
material)
o Underwear x 4 (quick dry / UnderArmour;
think ‘support’ for those bumpy roads … you will thank me)
o PJ pants & shirt
o Toque, scarf and mitts (safari
crew)
o Comfortable shoes – we are not
going to the Moon. Should be able to survive with one pair – so think versatile
– good enough for Church – appropriate for walking along a goat path … no problem if they get wet or muddy.
Girls – some of the items above plus these extra items and substitutes ….
o Sports bras (think bumpy roads)
o A bandana / headband / hair
elastics
o Sandals
o Long light skirts / dresses (NOT pants)
o Short-style underwear for underneath
x 4
o Short sleeve (not sleeveless) shirts
x 3 (avoid low cut styles) - think modest
o Comfortable pants for journey
to and from and take a pair for the safari … tourist areas are used to this.
